When reviewing your Personal Auto insurance policy documents, you may come across the terms "Uninsured Motorist coverage" and "Underinsured Motorist coverage". You may wonder, what do these coverages provide? In certain situations, Uninsured Motorist coverage and Underinsured Motorist coverage provide protection for you if you are injured in an accident with another driver who doesn't have adequate insurance:
-
Uninsured Motorist insurance provides coverage in the event of an accident when the at-fault driver either cannot be identified, or doesn't have Personal Auto insurance.
-
Underinsured Motorist insurance provides coverage when the driver at fault in an accident has Personal Auto insurance but the limits of the policy are not high enough to cover the costs of injury or damage from the accident, and these limits are less than you have on your policy. This means your insurance will provide coverage according to the terms of your policy for medical costs that exceed the coverage provided by the at-fault driver's insurance policy.
This coverage will only pay for medical and other expenses related to an injury as a result of a car accident. If your car is damaged by an uninsured driver, you must have the optional collision coverage to have the damage to your car paid for by your insurance company.
