Those who are most at risk of being bitten are children, adult males, and people who live with a dog. Children between five and nine are most likely to be bitten, and this usually occurs during every day activities. However, the number of child injuries related to dog bites seems to be going down.

When is the last time you had your chimney inspected? Fireplaces can add extra heat in the winter, but if they're not properly maintained, they can also become a hazard.

The purpose of a chimney is to carry hazardous gases and smoke out of your home. If chimneys are not cleaned regularly, residue called creosote can build up inside your chimney and catch fire. When you clean your chimney and have it inspected periodically, you help ensure there is a clear pathway for gasses and heat to escape.

If you're planning on curling up in front of your fireplace this winter, keep the following tips in mind to help prevent chimney fires:

  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year by a chimney professional. A chimney professional will make sure your chimney is structurally sound and will remove creosote buildup and any other debris (such as animal nests).

  • Only burn dried-out wood - cardboard, trash, or other objects can burn very quickly and the flames can get out of control.

  • Keep your fireplace doors opened or cracked when burning a fire, as restricted air supply can cause creosote buildup.

  • Stay on the lookout for signs of chimney fires. Indications of chimney fires include dense smoke and a loud rumbling noise (often compared to a freight train). If you think you have a chimney fire, get everyone safely out of your home and call the fire department immediately.

  • It is important to note that some chimney fires are slow-burning and may not make loud noises or have lots of smoke. These can cause damage to your home as well and weaken the structure of your chimney.

Chimney fires often lead to house fires. It's important to follow safe fire-burning practices and keep regular maintenance on your chimney.

Every summer, our team gets calls from customers after a fun weekend on the water takes a turn for the worse. Often, these accidents could have been prevented with just a few simple precautions. Here are a few tips we like - courtesy of our partners at Safeco.

Don't let an accident wreck your fun!

Life Preservers Aren't Just for Kids. It's not enough to just have life jackets on board — wear them! In an accident, people rarely have time to reach for a life jacket. This rule applies to adults, not just children: More people in their 30s die in boating accidents than any other age group. Life vests have come a long way in style. Today, you can even get vests for your water-loving dog!

Watercraft Insurance

Most home insurance policies have limited coverage for boats. If you own a boat, watercraft insurance is your best bet: It covers theft, damage, and injuries or accidents while you're on the water, as well as some of your expensive watersports gear.

Watch the Back of the Boat. Carbon monoxide kills in minutes. So tell your passengers where your exhaust pipes are located and turn off your engine when people are in the water, and don't let passengers "ski" or "teak-surf" by holding on to the back of the boat. Both Washington and Oregon made teak-surfing illegal in the last few years, after several tragic deaths. Carbon monoxide detectors are standard on most new boats; you can install one on older boats for less than $100.

Alcohol and Boating Don't Mix. More than 50 percent of drowning's result from boating incidents involving alcohol. You don't drink and drive, so don't boat and drive.

Boats Need TLC Too. When you're out on the water, make sure your gas tanks are vented and bilges are free of vapors, oil, waste and grease. Carry a charged fire extinguisher. Have your boat's operating systems checked yearly by a certified marine technician. The Coast Guard Auxiliary and United States Power Squadrons also offer free vessel safety checks.

Experience Counts! The U.S. Coast Guard says that operator errors account for 70 percent of all boating accidents. Make sure anyone who drives your boat is properly trained. You can also earn boat insurance discounts from Safeco and other insurers if you complete a safety course with the Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadrons.

And because emergency relief agencies were not in the business of saving pets, nearly half a million animals were left behind, devastating many owners and causing public outrage on their behalf. Passed in 2006 as a direct result of Hurricane Katrina, the Pet Evacuation and Transportation Act now requires state and local agencies to consider pets and service animals in their emergency preparedness plans. While most of us won't experience a disaster like Hurricane Katrina in our lifetimes, it's still up to us to consider our beloved companion animals when planning for emergencies, big and small. Here are a few things you can do:

For most American families, summer is outdoor celebration time, fireworks time, barbecue time, and fun-in-the-sun-by-the-pool time. If you're the one who happens to be hosting, however, it's important to recognize that these quintessential summer activities present unique risks, as well as potential liability issues.

Are homeowners really responsible for their guests?

Social host liability specifically refers to the responsibilities of a host or establishment that serves alcohol. When it comes to these laws, every state is different. Homeowners can also be held liable if an accident occurs on their property due to unsafe conditions, such as failing to maintain pool or playground equipment.

Before inviting summer guests, know your state's laws and visit with your insurance professional to understand your responsibilities as a host. In the meantime, here are a few ways to avoid common summer mishaps and ensure that you, your family, and guests are protected.

Grill with skill: It's no surprise that a gas or charcoal barbecue is a potentially dangerous piece of equipment. Make sure yours is well cleaned and in working order before your first summer cookout. Always operate the grill in an open space, away from furniture, decks, or children at play, and never use a barbecue indoors. When operating the grill, wear protective clothing and use appropriate utensils to avoid getting burned. Never leave a grill unattended. Finally, in case of fire, keep a fire extinguisher, baking soda, or a bucket of sand close by.

Prevent Foodborne Illness: When cooking outdoors, use the same safe food handling practices you would use in the kitchen. Keep raw meats separate from other foods, and don't leave any food items out for an extended period of time. Use a thermometer to be sure meats are cooked thoroughly, and never reuse a marinade that has already come in contact with raw meat. Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Last but not least, always wash your hands before and after handling food.

Practice Pool Safety: According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 400 children drown each year and thousands more are injured while using a pool. Whether you're staying cool in a backyard or community pool, it's important to take safety precautions to prevent the worst from happening. First, don't allow children, even older ones, to use any pool unattended. Remember, knowing how to swim is an asset, but it's not guaranteed to prevent accidents. Private residence pools should be well maintained and securely fenced when not in use. Most importantly, make sure an adult is always assigned to keep their eyes on the water with no distractions.

Use Caution When Serving Alcohol: Serving alcohol to minors is an obvious no-no, but a homeowner can also be held responsible for underage drinking on their property even if they were not present or did not condone the behavior. Similarly, some states hold hosts liable for negligently serving alcohol to visibly intoxicated guests, if the guest's condition results in an accident or crime. Aside from the potential liability issues, serving alcohol at any event increases the risk that somebody will get hurt; so be sure to serve cautiously and keep an eye on guests who are drinking, especially if they are driving.

As long as you take reasonable steps to keep your property free of hazards, there's no reason to be discouraged from inviting friends, neighbors and family to your home for some hot dogs and hamburgers or an afternoon dip in the pool. Become a smart host to enjoy safe celebrations all summer long.

There is no shortage of distractions in the modern world. Distracted driving has become a national issue, and many schools and public agencies are scrambling to raise awareness of the problem. The National Safety Council estimates that one in four car accidents involve cell phone use, but many people still believe that talking or texting while driving is harmless. Using electronics while driving is only one of the dangerous habits that have become all too common for today's drivers.

Enormous inflatable bouncy castles also known as bounce houses are often seen at kids' birthday parties and the like. They're colorful, bulbous enclosures where cake and ice cream filled youngsters can jump to their hearts' content, burn off some of the manic sugar buzz, and one would presume stay out of harm's way. In recent months, however, what once seemed to be a benign source of entertainment for the young and young and heart has come to be regarded as a menacing, potentially injurious if not deadly choice for party-day entertainment.

Most new parents would probably admit that their driving habits changed after having children. The one-time daredevil of the highway has transformed into a doting dad who never pushes the speedometer past a sluggish 65 mph; the lady lead foot who laughed in the faces of cops is now a minivan-loving, law abider who cruises so slow she would try the patience of a turtle.

Things change around the house during the holidays. One family member is perched on a sky-high ladder hanging up festive lights on your home's exterior. Another is slaving over a hot stove for hours on end. Youngsters are playing on all sorts of unfamiliar, newfangled toys. And there's often a huge, flammable tree in the living room. Needless to say, the opportunities for accidents are many during this time of year. While we hope to let a sense of joy and gratitude reign over this month in Minnesota, it's also prudent to be cautious and take a few steps to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property during this vulnerable time.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is often called the “silent killer” for a reason — it’s invisible, odorless, and tasteless, yet can be deadly. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 200 people in the United States die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning, most often due to malfunctioning gas appliances. The American Medical Association reports even higher numbers and identifies CO poisoning as the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in the country.
