What should you do after a car accident?
If you have ever been in a car accident, you know it can be very stressful. It can be difficult to remember what you should do, but taking the proper steps can make it easier to deal with.
Here are some important things you should do:
1. Check for injuries: Call for immediate medical help if anyone in your car or somebody else has been injured.
2. Be Safe: Help to alert other drivers by turning on your emergency flashers, and set up flares or warning devices if they are avaialble.
3. Notify the police: You will want the accident properly documented in case you need to make an insurance claim. The officer will be able to interview you, other persons involved, and any witnesses to get all the relevant details. They will also be able to dertermine who was at fault. It is best to only discuss the accident with the police or a representative from your insurance company. Do not admit fault or accept responsiblity for the accident yourself.
4. Exchange contact information: You will want to get the following from the other parties involved: Name, Address, Phone Number, Insurance Company & Policy Number, insurance claim reporting phone number, and a description of the other car.
5. Take photos: Use your phone to take photos of the damage to the vehicles and the accident scene. Also, if you can take photos of the license plates, drivers license and insurance ID card of the other drivers involved, this will give you most of the information you will need when submitting the claim to your insurance company.
6. Make notes with this information to reference later, and draw yourself a picture with the accident details if that will help you remember what happened.
7. Report the accident to your insurance company: As soon as possible, call your insurance company or insurance agent to report the accident. They will then assign a claims adjuster to settle the claim for you.
